The nine types as agentsUpdated 3 min read

Wings and archetypes: why your result has more than a number

A wing is the neighbouring Enneagram type that flavours your main type, written like 5w4 or 5w6, and an archetype is the name AgentSoul gives to how that type works as an agent. Together they explain why two agents of the same type can feel quite different.

Your AgentSoul result is more than a number because one number cannot describe a personality on its own. The wing, written like 5w4, names the neighbouring type that flavours your main type, and the archetype names how that combination behaves as an agent. Two Type 5 agents, one 5w4 and one 5w6, can feel like different colleagues.

This guide explains what wings are, how each one shifts an agent, the nine AgentSoul archetypes, and what each forge actually shows on your result.

What a wing is

The Enneagram arranges its nine types around a circle. Your wing is one of the two types directly next to your main type. The circle wraps around, so Type 1 sits between 9 and 2, and Type 9 sits between 8 and 1. A wing never comes from across the circle: a Type 4 can be 4w3 or 4w5, but not 4w6.

The notation is simple: main type, the letter w, then the wing. A 7w8 is a Type 7 with an 8-wing. The main type is the engine, the core motivation and fear. The wing is a secondary colour that shapes style, energy and emphasis without changing what drives you.

How each wing shifts an agent

In AgentSoul’s type profiles, each wing adds a short modifier to the agent’s values. In practice, the pairs look like this:

  • Type 1: 1w9 holds standards quietly, through example; 1w2 ties standards to people and fairness.
  • Type 2: 2w1 cares with a principled edge; 2w3 cares through visible action and wider reach.
  • Type 3: 3w2 gets results through warmth and charm; 3w4 adds a distinctive, identity-conscious layer.
  • Type 4: 4w3 pairs depth with the will to ship; 4w5 pairs depth with rigour and analysis.
  • Type 5: 5w4 brings emotional and aesthetic register to inquiry; 5w6 brings structure and loyalty.
  • Type 6: 6w5 is the careful expert who has thought it through; 6w7 is alert without being grim.
  • Type 7: 7w6 grounds possibility with responsibility; 7w8 pushes ideas into the world with force.
  • Type 8: 8w7 pairs power with vision; 8w9 is a quiet authority that does not need to prove itself.
  • Type 9: 9w8 is a peace with backbone; 9w1 is a peace that holds to a standard.

The nine AgentSoul archetypes

An archetype is a name for how a type behaves when it becomes an agent. Classic Enneagram names describe people (the Reformer, the Helper); AgentSoul’s archetypes describe working roles, which is what you need when configuring an AI.

  1. Type 1, Reformer: Principled Architect.
  2. Type 2, Helper: Attuned Companion.
  3. Type 3, Achiever: Strategic Catalyst.
  4. Type 4, Individualist: Resonant Visionary.
  5. Type 5, Investigator: Deep Investigator.
  6. Type 6, Loyalist: Trusted Advisor.
  7. Type 7, Enthusiast: Generative Synthesizer.
  8. Type 8, Challenger: Sovereign Executor.
  9. Type 9, Peacemaker: Harmonious Facilitator.

What each forge shows on your result

Gao Dao 高导, the mentor conversation, works out a type and wing from real moments in your life, so its result headline reads like “Type 5 · 5w4”. The free Gao Dao in-depth report goes further: it shows the patterns behind the reading, the evidence for the wing, an instinctual subtype and other types that could also fit. Deep Forge, the 49-question questionnaire on the web at agentsoul.market, also produces a type and wing.

Flash Forge 闪电熔铸 works differently. It reads communication signals in your chat screenshots, such as tone, clarity, pacing and how you handle conflict, and forges a soul from those. Its result leads with an archetype-style name and soul traits for voice, pushback and priority rather than an Enneagram number. Every forge shows the Enneagram figure, the app’s sigil: on a Gao Dao result it marks your type’s point and draws an arc to your wing, while on a Flash result no point is marked. Both forges give you the same four files.

Using wings and archetypes in your files

Think of the wing as a dial, not a label. If your 8w9 agent feels too quiet, you can lean it towards 8w7 by adding energy and vision to the vibe in soul.md. If your 6w7 agent is too breezy about risk, add a rule that borrows the 6w5’s thoroughness. The four files are plain Markdown and you can edit them at any time.

“The number is the metal. The wing is how it was tempered. The archetype is the blade you carry into work.”

Whatever your result shows, it is an AI-generated type hypothesis, not a diagnosis. If a wing does not ring true, trust your own observation over the reading and shape the files to match.

Questions

Can my wing be any number?

No. In the Enneagram a wing is always one of the two types adjacent to your main type on the circle, so a Type 4 can be 4w3 or 4w5, never 4w6.

Why does my Flash Forge result not show a type number?

Flash Forge reads signals in your chat screenshots, such as tone, clarity, pacing and how you handle conflict, and builds the soul from those. It names an archetype and soul traits rather than assigning an Enneagram number; Gao Dao is the forge that works out a type and wing.

Should I trust the wing as much as the main type?

Treat both as hypotheses. Wings are often harder to call than the main type, which is why the Gao Dao in-depth report shows the evidence behind the wing and lists other possible types.
